McAllister silences Ibrox, then Lukic punches it into his own net

The first leg of the European Cup's 'Battle of Britain' was played with no Leeds fans inside Ibrox. Leeds scored almost at once; Rangers still won 2–1.

The draw for the second round of the 1992–93 European Cup put the champions of Scotland against the champions of England. Rangers, chasing their first European trophy since the 1972 Cup Winners' Cup, would play Howard Wilkinson's Leeds United, who had only got through the first round after a replay against Stuttgart at the Camp Nou.

It was billed as the Battle of Britain. Both clubs agreed, for travel and security reasons, that there would be no away supporters at either leg. When the first leg kicked off at Ibrox on 21 October, the crowd of 43,251 was all Rangers.

A goal down

It went quiet almost at once. Inside the first couple of minutes Leeds won a corner and Gary McAllister, born in Motherwell, scored with a volley. One account of the night describes the crowd going "from bouncing to funereal in an instant."

Leeds, with Eric Cantona and Gordon Strachan in the side, held the lead for about 20 minutes. Then Rangers won a corner of their own. John Lukic came off his line to deal with it and, in the words of one retelling, "punched the ball a good twelve yards into his own net."

McCoist's rebound

Before half-time another corner brought the second. Lukic saved Dave McPherson's header, but the ball came back out and, as the same account puts it, "five Leeds defenders allowed an unmarked Ally McCoist to tap in the rebound."

That was the end of the scoring. Walter Smith's side had come from behind to win 2–1, but the lead was a single goal and Leeds had an away goal to take home.

What came next

The second leg was at Elland Road two weeks later, again with no visiting fans. Rangers won that one 2–1 as well, through Mark Hateley and McCoist, and went through to the group stage. There they went unbeaten and finished a point behind Marseille, who went on to win the final and were later stripped of the title over match-fixing. Rangers won the domestic treble that season. Leeds, the English champions, finished 17th in the Premier League.
