Hateley strikes early and Goram holds out Leeds at Elland Road

Leeds United went into the second leg of the Battle of Britain needing one goal. Mark Hateley scored for Rangers inside three minutes, and Andy Goram kept out almost everything Eric Cantona tried.

Rangers had won the first leg 2–1 at Ibrox, but Gary McAllister's early goal that night gave Leeds United an away goal. A 1–0 win at Elland Road would take the English champions through, and much of the English press thought the tie as good as settled.

Howard Wilkinson did not hide from it. "It's no secret we have been conceding goals this season and it is a problem," he said, "but we will certainly score against Rangers and we will win the tie." Rangers' Richard Gough had his own view. "I would love to see how they would handle it if we were to score very early as they did against us at Ibrox," he said.

As at Ibrox, away supporters were barred. The crowd on 4 November was 25,118. Leeds were without David Batty, who had damaged ankle ligaments against Coventry City, and David Rocastle, making only his second appearance since joining from Arsenal, took his place.

Hateley

Gough got what he wanted. Inside three minutes Mark Hateley met the ball with a volley from around 25 yards. One Leeds account says it went in so hard that, as it flew into the top corner, John Lukic "fell backward as if he'd been shot." Rangers led 3–1 on aggregate, and Leeds now needed three goals.

They went looking for them, and found Andy Goram in the way. Moments before Hateley scored, Goram had already saved from Eric Cantona, and he kept doing it. At one point Cantona skipped past the defence and seemed certain to score before Goram clawed the ball away. He also turned a shot from Rod Wallace onto the post.

McCoist

Rangers, with five across midfield, kept Leeds from taking control and struck again around the hour. Hateley broke down the left and crossed, and Ally McCoist headed in at the far post, unmarked. The goal was voted the fourth-greatest in Rangers' history in a 2018 poll.

Cantona finally beat Goram with about five minutes left, after a header from Lee Chapman. It made the night 2–1 and changed nothing.

Wilkinson spoke afterwards. "In virtually every respect, I cannot see how my team could possibly have done better," he said, "and after tonight, right now I find it difficult to understand how Scotland ever lose football matches." The Daily Record called it Rangers' best display in twenty years.

After

Walter Smith's side went through the group stage unbeaten, finishing a point behind Marseille. They also won the domestic treble. Leeds, the English champions, finished 17th in the Premier League.
