Real Madrid put nine past Happel's Tirol
Emilio Butragueño scored three and Hugo Sánchez somersaulted after four as Real Madrid beat the Austrian champions 9–1 at the Bernabéu.
Swarovski Tirol were no makeweights. Ernst Happel had made them champions of Austria in 1989 and again in 1990, and they arrived at the Santiago Bernabéu for the first leg of the European Cup second round as the best side in their country. They went home having conceded nine.
Butragueño and Sánchez
Emilio Butragueño scored inside five minutes. Hugo Sánchez scored after seven, and again after 14. Madrid were three up before a quarter of an hour had gone. Tirol pulled one back, but Butragueño added a fourth on the half-hour and Fernando Hierro made it five before the interval.
Butragueño completed his hat-trick three minutes after half-time. Sánchez scored again on 72 minutes, Miguel Tendillo, on as a half-time substitute, got the eighth on 80, and Sánchez finished it with five minutes left. Most records give him four on the night, although one match database lists his second, in the 14th minute, as a Tirol own goal.
Sánchez marked each of his goals with his trademark somersault, a habit he had adopted in honour of his sister, a gymnast who competed at the Montreal Olympics.
The Golden Shoe winner
The season before, Sánchez had scored 38 league goals, equalling Telmo Zarra's Spanish record from 1951, and every one of them was scored with a single touch. It won him the European Golden Shoe, and Madrid won the league, their fifth title in a row.
John Toshack's team that night also included Míchel and Gheorghe Hagi.
What came after
The second leg in Innsbruck on 7 November finished 2–2, Sebastián Losada scoring both Madrid goals, for an 11–3 aggregate win.
Madrid's season then went wrong, and Toshack was sacked on 25 November, a month after the nine. Alfredo Di Stéfano took over, and resigned when Spartak Moscow knocked Madrid out in the quarter-finals in March. Sánchez, troubled by injury, managed only 19 league games and had surgery in April.
Swarovski Tirol, Happel's champions, were dissolved in 1992.
