Bill Shankly, 1913–1981

He took over a Second Division club with a pitch that could not be watered and left it with three league titles, two FA Cups and a European trophy. Seven years after walking away, he died having never quite worked out how to live without it.

Bill Shankly died at Broadgreen Hospital in Liverpool in the early hours, three days after a heart attack, with his wife Nessie beside him. He had arrived at a Second Division club in 1959 and built the Liverpool that won three league titles, two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup. His retirement in 1974 was the one decision he could never make peace with.
