Ajax finish what Avellaneda started

Three weeks after a first leg their coach called war, Ajax beat Independiente 3–0 in Amsterdam to become world club champions for the first time.

Ajax beat Independiente 3–0 in Amsterdam to win the Intercontinental Cup, 4–1 on aggregate. Johan Neeskens scored early and Johnny Rep twice, one from a Cruyff pass. The first leg in Argentina had been so violent that Ajax's players had refused to come out for the second half.
