The night Forest knocked out the European champions

Liverpool had won the European Cup two years running. Nottingham Forest had just been promoted. The draw put them together in the first round, and Forest went to Anfield with a 2–0 lead.

Nottingham Forest, playing their first European Cup, held Liverpool 0–0 at Anfield to knock the two-time holders out in the first round. Garry Birtles and Colin Barrett had scored at the City Ground a fortnight earlier. Forest went on to win the competition in Munich eight months later.

Four goals, five for Celtic, and still out

Dariusz Dziekanowski scored four times as Celtic beat Partizan Belgrade 5–4 in the Cup Winners' Cup, and with two minutes left they were through.

Ronaldinho scored a hat-trick as Barcelona beat Udinese 4–1 at the Camp Nou, starting with a curling free-kick.

The ragamuffin who took everything from Donald Curry — Lloyd Honeyghan, a 7–1 outsider from London, took the undisputed world welterweight title from the unbeaten Donald Curry in Atlantic City.
