Batistuta, Lehmann and three goals at San Siro

Fiorentina went to Milan with two wins from two. Gabriel Batistuta scored three, and Milan's goalkeeper had a hand in all of them.

Gabriel Batistuta scored a hat-trick as Fiorentina won 3–1 at San Siro, the first two slipping past Milan's new goalkeeper Jens Lehmann and the third coming from an indirect free-kick after Lehmann handled a back-pass. Fiorentina led Serie A into the new year. Lehmann was soon out of the Milan side.

Chris Finnegan, the 1968 Olympic champion, challenged Bob Foster for the world light-heavyweight title at Wembley and gave him a genuine fight for nine rounds.
